Breast augmentation
Breast augmentation is a sophisticated surgical procedure designed to enhance the volume, contour, and symmetry of the breasts to create a more balanced silhouette. For many women, this procedure serves as a transformative step in restoring body proportions after life changes or addressing long-standing aesthetic concerns. Our approach prioritizes a refined, natural-looking result that aligns with your unique anatomy and personal confidence goals.
Women choose breast augmentation for a variety of reasons. Some wish to restore volume lost due to pregnancy or weight fluctuations, others seek to correct congenital asymmetry, and many simply desire a fuller profile that better fits their frame. The ultimate objective is to achieve a result that feels authentic to the patient’s body while providing the desired enhancement in shape and size.
What is Breast Augmentation?
Technically known as augmentation mammoplasty, the procedure involves the surgical placement of implants or the use of fat transfer to increase breast fullness. Most commonly, medical-grade implants—filled with either cohesive silicone gel or sterile saline—are positioned either behind the glandular breast tissue or beneath the pectoralis major muscle.
Implants are available in an extensive range of sizes, shapes, and profiles. Selecting the correct implant is a meticulous process; your surgeon will evaluate your chest wall dimensions, existing tissue coverage, and skin elasticity to recommend the option that provides the most stable and aesthetically pleasing outcome. The goal is to ensure the weight and volume of the implant are well-supported by your body for long-term comfort and durability.
Who is breast augmentation for?
Breast augmentation may be suitable for women who:
- Experience a lack of volume that makes clothing or swimwear fit poorly
- Have noticed a significant loss of firmness and volume after breastfeeding
- Possess a noticeable difference in size or shape between the left and right breast
- Have underdeveloped breasts that affect their body proportions
- Wish to restore a more youthful appearance in conjunction with a breast lift
Before the operation
The foundation of a successful breast augmentation is a comprehensive clinical consultation. During this meeting, your surgeon will perform a physical examination, measure your proportions, and discuss your lifestyle and aesthetic preferences. We use this time to educate you on the various incision types—typically in the breast crease or around the nipple—and the placement options (submuscular or subglandular).
You will be provided with specific preoperative instructions, which include abstaining from smoking for several weeks and avoiding anti-inflammatory medications. Pre-surgical imaging or "sizing" sessions allow you to visualize how different volumes will look on your frame.
During the operation
Breast augmentation is performed in a sterile environment under general anesthesia and typically lasts between 1 and 2 hours. Your surgeon creates a precise incision in the pre-agreed location to minimize visible scarring.
A "pocket" is then carefully created to house the implant. Once the implant is positioned, the surgeon assesses the symmetry while you are on the operating table to ensure the most accurate result. The incisions are then closed with layered internal sutures and skin-safe dressings are applied. Most patients return home the same day.
After the operation and recovery
Following the procedure, you will be moved to a recovery suite for monitoring. You will be required to wear a surgical support bra 24/7 for several weeks to stabilize the implants and reduce swelling.
The initial recovery phase involves some localized soreness and a feeling of tightness in the chest, which is managed with prescribed pain relief. Most patients return to light daily activities within one week. However, you must refrain from heavy lifting and vigorous exercise for at least 4 to 6 weeks. While the change is visible immediately, it takes several months for the implants to settle into their final, soft, and natural position.
How long do breast implants last?
Breast implants are high-quality medical devices, but they are not considered lifetime items. While many patients enjoy their implants for 10–15 years or more, they may eventually require replacement due to normal wear, changes in the body over time, or a desire to change size.
Will my breasts look and feel natural?
When an implant is correctly chosen for your body width and tissue type, the results can be very natural. Your surgeon will recommend a profile and placement—often under the muscle—that provides sufficient tissue coverage to ensure a soft feel and a natural slope.
Can I breastfeed after the procedure?
Most women are able to breastfeed successfully after breast augmentation. The most common incision techniques are designed to preserve the milk ducts and nerves. However, it is important to discuss your future plans for pregnancy with your surgeon during the consultation.
Are there risks involved?
As with any major surgery, risks include infection, bleeding, or reactions to anesthesia. Specific to implants, there is a risk of capsular contracture or implant displacement. Choosing an experienced, board-certified surgeon and following all aftercare protocols significantly mitigates these risks.
