Buttock implants
Buttock augmentation with implants, or gluteal augmentation, is a surgical procedure designed to enhance the volume, shape, and projection of the posterior. By utilizing specialized medical-grade implants, this procedure provides a permanent solution for individuals who desire a firmer and more defined gluteal profile that cannot be achieved through exercise or fat transfer alone. Our approach focuses on creating a balanced, athletic contour that harmonizes with your natural body proportions and enhances your overall silhouette.
A well-defined buttock is often considered a hallmark of a fit and proportionate figure. However, genetics, aging, and significant weight loss can result in a flat or sagging posterior that lacks the desired projection. While fat grafting (the "Brazilian Butt Lift") is a popular alternative, it requires sufficient donor fat and some volume may be reabsorbed. Buttock implants offer a predictable, permanent alternative for patients seeking significant enhancement and a firmer structural result.
What are Buttock Implants?
Buttock implants are constructed from a high-quality, solid, yet soft cohesive silicone gel. Unlike breast implants, these are specifically designed to withstand the rigors of physical activity and the pressure of sitting. They are available in various shapes—round or oval—and sizes to accommodate different anatomical frames and aesthetic goals.
There are two primary placement techniques used to ensure the most natural appearance and minimize complications:
- Intramuscular Placement: The implant is placed directly inside the gluteus maximus muscle. This provides the best coverage, a more natural feel, and reduces the risk of the implant shifting or becoming visible through the skin.
- Subfascial Placement: The implant is placed above the muscle but beneath the thick connective tissue (fascia) covering it. This is often used for patients who require a specific type of projection or have different muscular structures.
The surgery is often combined with liposuction of the flanks or lower back to further accentuate the "sweep" of the buttocks and create a more dramatic transition between the waist and the hips.
Who are buttock implants for?
This procedure is ideal for individuals who are in good health and seek a permanent increase in posterior volume. You may be a candidate if:
- You have a naturally flat or "square" buttock shape that lacks projection.
- You do not have enough excess body fat to undergo a fat transfer (BBL).
- You have lost volume or experienced sagging due to massive weight loss or the aging process.
- You desire a firmer, more "lifted" appearance that exercise has failed to produce.
- You have realistic expectations about the recovery process and long-term results.
Before the operation
Your journey begins with a thorough clinical consultation. Your surgeon will evaluate your muscle tone, skin elasticity, and the existing volume of your gluteal region. You will discuss your aesthetic goals, and your surgeon will help you select the appropriate implant size and shape based on your hip width and pelvic structure.
Preoperative instructions are rigorous. You must stop smoking and avoid all nicotine products for at least six weeks before and after surgery, as nicotine significantly increases the risk of wound complications in this high-tension area. You will also be advised to arrange for significant assistance at home, as your mobility will be limited during the first phase of recovery.
During the operation
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes 2 to 3 hours. The surgeon makes a single, vertical incision in the midline of the intergluteal cleft (the crease between the buttocks). This placement ensures that the resulting scar is virtually invisible during daily activities or in swimwear.
The surgeon creates a precise pocket either within or above the muscle to house the implants. Once both implants are positioned and symmetry is meticulously confirmed, the incisions are closed with multiple layers of strong, dissolvable sutures to ensure the pocket remains secure. Temporary drains are occasionally used to prevent fluid accumulation, and a compression garment is applied immediately.
After the operation and recovery
The recovery for buttock implants is unique and requires strict adherence to post-operative protocols. For the first 2 to 3 weeks, you must avoid sitting directly on your buttocks or sleeping on your back. You will be required to use a specialized "donut" pillow or lie on your stomach to prevent pressure on the implants while the tissues heal.
Pain and a sensation of "tightness" are common in the first few days and are managed with prescribed analgesics. Most patients can return to sedentary work after 2 to 3 weeks, provided they use specialized cushions. Strenuous exercise, particularly squats or heavy lower-body lifting, must be avoided for at least 8 to 12 weeks. While the initial result is visible immediately, it takes several months for the muscles to relax and for the implants to settle into a soft, natural position.
Are buttock implants safe for sitting?
Yes. Modern gluteal implants are made of a highly durable, cohesive silicone that is specifically designed to handle the pressure of sitting and walking. However, during the initial recovery period (the first 2–3 weeks), it is vital to avoid sitting directly on them to ensure the incisions heal properly and the implants do not shift.
Where will the scar be located?
The incision is placed vertically in the hidden crease between the buttocks (the natal cleft). This is an excellent location for concealment, as the scar is tucked away and becomes very discreet once it matures. Your surgeon will provide specific instructions on hygiene and scar care for this area.
How do implants compare to a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL)?
A BBL uses your own fat, which provides a very natural feel but requires you to have enough donor fat and carries the risk of some fat being reabsorbed by the body. Buttock implants provide a "guaranteed" volume and a firmer, more projected result, making them the superior choice for patients who are very lean or who want a specific, structured shape.
Can the implants flip or move?
When placed in the intramuscular position by an experienced surgeon, the risk of "flipping" or displacement is significantly minimized. The muscle acts as a natural "internal bra," holding the implant securely in place. Following the post-operative instructions—especially regarding physical activity and compression—is key to preventing movement during the healing phase.
